Regina Mary Saunders

May 12, 2025 Jeffrey Wiecek

July 10, 1953 – May 12, 2025

Regina Mary Saunders (née Barry), a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on May 12, 2025. Born on July 10, 1953, in the Bronx, Regina was the cherished daughter of the late Jack and Cassie Barry (née Gallagher).

Regina was proud of her Bronx roots, as she grew up in a close-knit community and often spoke fondly of her childhood memories from University Avenue. She attended St. Nicholas of Tolentine High School, where she formed lifelong friendships and proudly played on the basketball team. Her vibrant spirit, infectious laughter, and natural leadership made her a standout both on and off the court. She was known to sing a song or two, and many would remember her late night renditions of Hello, Dolly!

On June 11, 1983, Regina married the love of her life, Brian Saunders. Together, they raised three children — Beth (Ali), Matthew, and Erin Downey (Brian) — in a home filled with warmth and love. Regina poured her heart into her family and found immense joy in her role as a devoted mother and doting grandmother.

For 18 years, Regina dedicated herself to the students of Saint Barnabas Elementary School in the Bronx, where she was both a beloved teacher and coach. Her deep connection with the community and her tireless support of the school’s athletic club left a lasting mark on countless lives.

In later years, Regina especially loved summers in Lavallette, where she made beautiful memories with her granddaughters Fiona, Neve, and Keely Downey. Those beachside moments with her family were some of her happiest.

She was known for her outgoing personality, vibrant energy, and genuine warmth — the kind of person who made everyone feel like family. Regina had a wide circle of friends and was very fond of the time she spent with them at dinners, Broadway shows, and special events. Her zest for life and compassionate heart were evident in everything she did.

Regina was predeceased by her parents, and her brother James Barry. She is survived by her loving husband, her treasured children and grandchildren, her brother Jack Barry (Claudia), her sister Eileen Naturale (John), and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Regina's legacy is one of love, laughter, and lasting impact. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the blessing of knowing her. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and gratitude for the time shared with such an extraordinary woman.

Reposing Friday May 16, 2025 from 3 - 7 pm at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home, 6110 Riverdale Avenue, Bronx NY. Mass of Christian Burial 10 am Saturday, May 17, 2025 at St. Barnabas, 409 E 241st St, Bronx, NY 10470. Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Jim Downey Memorial Fund, a charity started in 2009 by Regina’s son-in-law, Brian Downey, and his brothers, to support friends and family from local communities who are battling cancer.
